Nessa

I couldn’t stop watching people’s hands. As Jimmy and the band set up for practice in the living area of the guest house, I sat on the black leather couch and watched Ralphie’s fingers turn the tuning heads of his bass guitar before flicking the strings. A low, reverberating bop-bop-bop came out of his amp. He reached to adjust the setting on the speaker, and I watched his long fingers turn the knobs before my gaze traveled over to Jimmy. His fingers were curved around the neck of his guitar, making a G-chord. He strummed with his pick, and an electronic twang filled the room as he checked his tuning. Jace thumped the middle toms, and my eyes shot to his fingers wrapped around the drumsticks. He’d set the new kit up the day before—quietly walked in and puttered about while I pretended to read a magazine on the couch. I cringed and winced as he pieced it all together, setting it up to fit his large frame. The bass pedal thumped, and then he did a quick roll on the snare, a half-smile creeping over his lips before blooming full as he tested each drum with a quick solo.

My insides were charcoal by the time he was done. I could feel chunks of it breaking away and landing in my stomach acid—sizzling and burning until I felt sick.

Jimmy spun around to face Flick. “Should we start with the song you and Nessa wrote while we were filming Shock Wave? Jace doesn’t really know it yet.”

“Good idea.” Flick nodded then beckoned me over with a wave of his hand.

“What?” I ran my finger inside the edge of my knee hole and frowned.

“Come sing it with me.”

“I don’t need to sing it. You sing it.”

Flick rolled his eyes. “You wrote it, you douche. Now get up here and sing it with me.”

I pressed my lips together, looking away from his pointed stare. He growled in his throat, and I threw my head back and slapped the couch. “Fine! But I’m not taking lead.” I stormed over to the keyboard. “I’ll just do the harmony.”

Flick grunted, but I gave him my you’re not budging me look, and he gave in pretty quickly after that. His fingers danced over the keys before he nodded at Jimmy and Ralphie. They came in on cue while Jace sat there listening. He closed his eyes, his head bobbing as he absorbed the tune. I watched his finger tap on his knee as he found the rhythm easily.

Flick’s voice came out loud and clear, singing the words we’d spent hours debating over and perfecting. The song was good, and I remembered actually squealing like a freaking prom queen when we were allowed to perform it on Shock Wave. Marcus had promised us we’d get it onto our debut album, and I’d been giddy. A song I had written was going to be on a professional album! It was un-freaking-real.

I swallowed, struggling to find my joy, and nearly missed my cue.
